The staff of Kitale club and members of the public were left in shock following the discovery of an AK-47 rifle that had been abandoned in the forest next to the club.
The Thursday afternoon incident was confirmed by the Trans Nzoia County Police Commander (CPC) Jacinta Wesonga who said that the firearm was spotted by a passerby who had gone to the forest to answer to the call of nature.
“The man had gone to relieve himself but got curious when he saw an object protruding from a wrapped polythene bag that was hanging from one of the trees,” said Wesonga.
According to the Wesonga, the man decided to pull the object out of curiosity but was shocked to see that it was a weapon.
The man whose identity was not revealed alerted the Kitale Club’s manager who immediately alerted the police.
The police commander was accompanied by detectives to the scene and recovered the gun.
“The scenes-of-crime officers confirmed it was an AK-47,” said Wesonga, adding the firearm’s magazine was full with 7.62 ammunition rounds.
The county police boss further said the recovered firearm was serviceable.
“The scene was processed and security officers have launched investigations to unravel the source and motive behind the firearm’s presence in the forest,” added Wesonga.
She described the man who reported the incident as a good Samaritan and urged the public to alert security officers or relevant authorities whenever such incidents are encountered.
County Criminal Investigations Officer Francis Kihara said that the AK-47 will be taken for ballistic identification.
