The Communication Authority of Kenya has dispelled claims of a planned social media and internet shutdown ahead of nationwide demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024.
In a statement on Monday night, from Director General David Mugonyi, CA confirmed that it has received inquiries regarding ” an imminent internet shutdown on Tuesday 25, 2024.”
“For the avoidance , the Authority has no intention whatsoever to shutdown internet traffic or interfere with the quality of connectivity,” CA said, further explaining why it wouldn’t take such an action.
“Such actions would be a betrayal of the constitution as a whole, the freedom of expression in particular and our own ethos,” CA stated.
“Further, such actions would also sabotage our fast growing digital economy as internet connectivity supports thousands of livelihoods across the country.”
The Authority went on to urge Kenyans to use the digital space with respect and in accordance with the law.
Kenyans have however remained determined in ensuring that their voice is heard. Several of them have since gathered in Nairobi and other towns across the country ready for the protests as the Finance Bill goes through the second reading
On Monday, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki  issued tough conditions to protestors as they take to the streets.
“They must make sure that the enjoyment of these rights does not prejudice the rights and freedoms of others,” he said.
Kindiki added that, “They must not interfere with road rail, sea or air transport in any manner whatsoever. Whatever the demands, the issues, grievances or whatever the matter, the rule of law and public order must be maintained by all persons.”
“Protesters must inform the police of the routes they will take for purposes of providing escort and ensuring that there is law and order. They should notify the police of the timings of their activities.”
