Boxer Floyd Mayweather To Pay for George Floyd’s Funeral

Former boxing heavyweight Champion Floyd Mayweather has offered to pay for George Floyd’s funeral and memorial services, an offer which the family has accepted.

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Premotion said the boxing legend has personally been in contact with Floyd’s family. Mayweather will handle all the funeral costs on June 9 as well as other expenses.

George Floyd, an African American, died May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck while handcuffed and saying “I can’t breath”. George Floyd’s death has sparked protests within the US which has turned out to be violent.

According to the TMZ, Mayweather has offered to pay for services in Minnesota and North Carolina.

“He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, he is definitely paying for the funeral,” Ellerbe told ESPN.com on Monday.

Despite the fact that the former boxer agreeing to pay for the funeral expenses, Mayweather who lives in Las Vegas is yet to meet George Floyd’s family.

This is not the first time boxer showing a good gesture to a bereaved family. The former boxing champion in the past also paid for the funeral expense of an opponent.

In the boxing arena Mayweather left a good trail too, he retired undefeated after 50 fights and winning five division titles. Mayweather won his first world championship when he stopped Genaro Hernandez for the WBC super featherweight title back in 1998.

Mayweather’s opponent, Hernandez later died 13 years later of cancer and he handles his funeral expenses.

Mayweather is one of the best boxers in his generation. During his time, Mayweather defeated boxing champions such as Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, and Oscar de la Hoya before retiring in 2017
