Bomet Prison Break: Four Juveniles Among 9 Who Escaped From Police Custody

Date:

9 prisoners among them 4 juveniles escaped from Bomet police station where they were being held on Monday October 4.

The police report states that the 9 were discovered missing by the Officer Commanding the Station when he was making routine checks at the station.

It is alleged that the suspects escaped from custody through an opening they created after cutting several metal grills at the back of the cells.

It is however still unclear the tools that the prisoners used to cut the grills and how they were able to escape since two officers were manning the station.

The suspects had been accused of various offences and had been set to appear in court on Monday October 4.

Three of the adult  escapees, Clinton Nyakundi, Dominic Cheruiyot and Titus Rotich, had the same offence of stealing were scheduled to face theft charges while two others, Erick Bett and Victor Korir, were arrested for being in possession of illicit brew.

Police immediately launched a manhunt for the escapees and so far one of them was arrested and is helping the police in tracing the remaining suspects who are still on the run.

Imamai said that the juveniles were in custody since there is no juvenile prison in the area.

“Bomet and Kericho prisons don’t have a facility for juveniles, so juvenile prisoners held or having pending cases before court are held in stations instead of the prison, that’s why we had the four in our custody,” Imamai said.

This comes just weeks after 14 prisoners escaped from Nanyuki prison. The prisoners found their way out after cutting the door grills.

The security team then launched a manhunt, which resulted in the arrest of eight prison escapees while the remaining six were still at large.
