In Kenya and most parts of the world, most women prefer tall, dark and handsome men and especially those with 6 packs and well built muscles. The case is however different for the people of the Bodi tribe who live in the remote area of Omo valley in Ethiopia .
The Bodi people consider obesity and big bellies as handsomeness and the man with the biggest belly is lucky as there is no struggle for him to get a woman for hand in marriage.
Every year, a competition to crown the fattest man is held and the winner has women fighting to get married to him.
Preparations for the competition begin 6 months before the actual date. During the 6-month period, each contestant works hard to increase the size of his stomach.
That is not an easy exercise but the best option to achieve that is by taking fresh cow’s blood mixed with milk. That is the only meal that the men seeking to be crowned the most handsome are given. The drink helps fat to accumulate quickly in the stomach and its surrounding.
Aside from the meal requirement, the contestants are confined in separate huts for the 6 months and are not allowed to engage in sexual activities within the period.
On the competition day dubbed, Kael ceremony which comes in June every year, the contestants are brought before the tribe and measured. The one with the hugest belly is the champion and he gets the title and fame for the rest of his life. However before that, the completely naked men walk for hours around a sacred tree as they are watched by the Bodi people.
In the tribe also the women with more marks are considered beautiful. Such women are loved a lot by men. The marks are made by knives and blades.
