Bad News For Greedy Police Officers As Erection Of Unofficial Roadblocks Is Prohibited

Date:

Police officers have once again been warned against erecting unofficial roadblocks along the highways in the country in a fresh directive

The directives comes as a result of a meeting between the Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai, his deputy Edward Mbugua, regional commanders and county commanders in Nairobi.

Those who will be found erecting roadblocks that have not been approved will have to face consequences.

The police bosses also warned the police against detaining vehicles for long hours on the road without explanation.

According to a message from Mbugua, police officers continued to erect road blocks on highways without approval despite an earlier directive.

“This morning, I have directed Ainabkoi Traffic sub-base disbanded for continued laying of a roadblock, detaining vehicle for long hours without cause and complaints of collecting bribes from motorists with impunity despite earlier directives issued for Traffic management,” reads a memo by Mbugua dated September 3.

He directed the commanders to ensure that there are no roadblocks, static traffic checks, no detaining of vehicles along the road for long hours and no taking of bribes from motorists within their jurisdictions.

Mbugua said that in case there are complaints from the members of the public, investigations will be conducted and action taken against those found guilty.

“However, when an element of truth will be established, stiff action is taken against the individual errant officer but the whole sub base will be disbanded,” Mbugua said.

He also asked the commanders to ensure that there is maximum supervision on traffic management.

“I will call a meeting next week to draw proper strategy and review our progress on this subject matter,” he said.

The police commanders met for the third time this year to discuss the issue of traffic management.
