Lawyer Danstan Omari has disagreed with Babu Owino that all along Uhuru Kenyatta’s plan was to hand over power to William Ruto even though he publicly came out as a supporter of Raila Odinga.
Babu Owino came up with the allegations after Uhuru warmly welcomed Ruto to the statehouse for a tour and orientation, a day before he was sworn in. That was the first time the two leaders were meeting after a very long time.
“Thank you Uhuru Kenyatta for keeping your word to Ruto. Your body language tells it all.It was a LONG CON. We will still reach where we are going. If we could not hunt with a dog, we will use a cat,” Owino said.
Speaking in a TV interview on Wednesday, Omari however said that Uhuru just did what the constitution dictates and any other person who would have been in his shoes is expected to do the same.
“I don’t agree with my client Babu Owino that there was a con game between William Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta. The reason is that constitutionally, whether it was Babu Owino was seated there as the exiting president, he had no other option than to do what the constitution provisions say and what the assumption of office says,” the lawyer said.
“We have a constitution that is self propelling itself, it does not care whether you are annoyed, whether you have lost, if you are the exiting president, your roles are specified from the day the first voting day comes, you become a president waiting to hand over power. The manner, the mode, the venue, the procedures are cast stone,” he added.
Omari further said that Ruto is now the figure of the sovereignty of the state and his opposers have to accept that fact.
“President Kenyatta, William Ruto, Raila are citizens of this country. For now William Ruto is their president as well as the 49% people who voted for Raila. He is now the figure representing the sovereignty of the state,” he said.
The former president has faced similar accusations from Raila’s supporters who have claimed that he helped Ruto garner sympathy votes.
