Azimio one Kenya alliance has endorsed the proposal of Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo as National Assembly’s Minority leader and whip respectively.
This comes after Azimio’s parliamentary Group meeting held on Tuesday August 6, 2024.
According to a statement from ODM’s secretary general Edwin Sifuna, the decision was unanimous.
“The Azimio PG meeting has unanimously endorsed the proposals from @TheODM party to appoint Hon Junet Mohamed and Hon Millie Odhiambo as the new Minority Leader and Whip in the National Assembly respectively. On behalf of ODM, I thank all the Azimio constituent parties for their support and wish the two leaders well in their new positions,” Sifuna shared on X.
Junet will be replacing Opiyo Wandayi, who was nominated and vetted for the ministry of Energy.
Also in the changes, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi will chair the public Accounts committee, succeeding John Mbadi, who will be the next National Treasury Cabinet Secretary if his nomination is approved.
Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo will be replacing Amisi as the Vice Chair of Public Investments Committee.
This comes at a time when there is friction at Azimio coalition, which was orchestrated by President William Ruto’s move to include ODM members to his cabinet.
The move saw Martha Laura’s Narc Kenya cease to be part of the coalition.
Wiper and DAP-Kenya have also criticized the move, noting that it jeopardizes opposition.
Wiper Leader Kalonzl Musyoka was named the new Azimio leader last month, taking over from Raila, whose fight for African Union chairmanship has intensified.
