Rebecca Cheptegui, a Ugandan long distance runner is hospitalized in critical condition after being doused with petrol by her boyfriend Daniel Ndiema Marangach.
The incident happened on Sunday afternoon leaving the marathoner with 75degrees burns. Ndiema also sustained injuries in the incident and the couple is receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.
Sources reveal that Ndiema resorted to attacking Cheptegui due to domestic disputes.
On the fateful day, he is said to have sneaked at Cheptegui’s home in Trans Nzoia County, while she was at church with their children.
He would then pour the flammable liquid on her later and ignited it. Neighbors responded quickly to the distressing incident and managed to put out the fire before rushing the duo to Kitale County Referral Hospital where they were admitted and treated before being rushed to Eldoret.
The incident was confirmed by Trans Nzioa Deputy County Commander Salesio Muriithi, who said investigations are underway.
Cheptegui participated in last month’s Paris Olympics and finished in the 44th place. She hails from Cheminy in Uganda but she bought a house in Trans Nzoia, where she stays while training in Kenya.
