Kandara MP Alice Wahome has demanded that William Ruto must settle for a female running mate and that she must be from Murang’a county.
While speaking at a funeral in Murang’a county, Wahome stressed that she is more than capable to be Ruto’s running mate in 2022 presidential race.
The Kandara MP note that she’s ready to serve as the second in command for the fact that, she has been constantly fighting for Ruto.
Wahome’s demand is likely to cause tension in UDA as Ruto had hinted that he would pick Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.
Gachagua is from Nyeri county and he is also one of the most loyal supporters of Ruto from Mt. Kenya region.
Ruto on December 4th while campaigning in Nyeri gave the clearest hint that he will most likely pick on Gachagua as his running mate.
“I want to ask you for one favor, allow Gachagua to accompany me to other parts of the country so that we can be able to win this seat. Free him so that he can engage in national politics,” Ruto told Nyeri residents during one of his many tours to the region.
Ruto said that Gachagua is one of his trusted ally and as such he would want him in his national campaign to boost his chances of becoming president next year.
The DP’s words loosely translated in politics means he was asking Nyeri residents to allow the Mathira MP to play politics on the national stage as opposed to seeking any elective seat in the county or constituency.
Gachagua is seen as a powerful force in Central Kenya politics due his strong mobilization skills and deep pockets even though he faces numerous corruption battles.
Ruto’s insiders have exuded confidence that the DP will pick his running mate from the vote-rich Central Kenya to maximize his potential of winning the presidency in August when president Uhuru Kenyatta will be leaving office.
With Wahome declaring interest to be Ruto’s running mate, it is going to be hard for the DP to reconcile personal ambitions within his camp.
