Days after Embakasi East Returning officer Daniel Musyoka was reported dead, another IEBC official is reportedly suffering consequences of the recent general election.
Mohamed Kanyare served as the presiding officer at the Towheed polling center in Eldas Constituency, Wajir county and has permanently lost one of his legs following violence that broke out at the constituency’s tallying center on August 10.
According to to a tweet by Noordin Maalim, on the fateful day, Kanyare was headed to the Eldas Constituency Development Fund to submit results of his polling center when he was stopped by some people believed to be allied to one of the MP candidates at the gate. He was asked to enter a nearby car so that he could alter results on Form 35A but he declined only for him to be shot three times on the leg later.
“Inside the CDF Hall, when he was about to hand over the forms and gadgets to the deputy returning officer, someone switched off the lights and Kanyare was shot at close range,” Maalim wrote.
Following the incident, the presiding officer was rushed to Wajir County Hospital, where his leg was amputated. One more person was also injured during the fracas.
On the night before election on August 9, chaos erupted at the Eldas CDF offices with the police exchanging fire with unknown individuals.
There was also standoff over questions on the criteria that was used to select presiding officers and their deputies.
Abdi Gulie, an IEBC commissioner, was forced to travel from Nairobi to Wajir in order to resolve the matter so that voting could kick off.
A day after voting, supporters of the sitting Eldas MP Adan Keynan and Dr Adan Boray (ODM) clashed thus interfering with the vote counting process. The exercise was allegedly moved to Wajir county, and was done under wraps before Keynan, who vied on a Jubilee ticket, was pronounced winner. UDA’s Omar Hajji and one more candidate were alsp in the race.
