Raila Proves Again That Handshake Is Still Strong

Just to confirm that the handshake between him and his political brother, President Uhuru Kenyatta is still strong, Raila gave the president another hand by endorsing Sports CS Amina Mohammed bid for top World Trade Organization (WTO) job.

On Thursday, Raila Odinga heaped praise, Amina Mohammed, as he wished her the best of luck ahead of the Geneva vote.

Amina Mohammed is expected to present her case on Thursday in Geneva ahead of the critical vote.

“Amina is a skilled diplomat and Pan-Africanist with compassion and proven commitment to multilateralism and development. I have no doubt whatsoever that she will do a fine job at the WTO,” Raila tweeted.

The endorsement by the ODM leader comes just a few days after the president endorsed Ambassador Amina for the same position.

“The length and breadth of her experience with the WTO and the multilateral trading system combined with her extensive track record in international relations and her political experience, I believe is unparalleled,” The President said.

According to President Uhuru, the CS has devoted a significant part of her professional career championing the benefit of trade,

The Geneva-based organization is seeking a replacement for Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo who resigning a year early at the end of August.

If CS Amina takes the seat, she will need to steer reforms and negotiations in the face of rising protectionism, growing trade tension, notably between the Washington and Beijing and a deep recession caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

CS amino goes into the contestation with a good CV. She is a former Kenyan ambassador to WTO and the first woman to chair the WTO’s General Council in 2005.

Kenya will be facing competition for the top seat from South Korea, Moldova, Mexico, Egypt, and Nigeria.

At the moment, an Africa candidate and a woman enjoys broad support for the seat since neither has headed the WTO in the past.
