Kenyans took to social media on Friday to express their displeasure with a story done by Moi owned Media house – Standard Newspaper.
Kenyans were not happy after the national newspaper gave a headline to one of their top stories depicting that the government employed teachers were going to earn salary despite being told to stay at home for the next six months.
The Standard’s headline wrote: “TSC teachers to get their salaries despite being idle”
The headline by the newspaper comes days after the teacher’s employer – Teachers Service Commission (TSC) told its members they will get its salaries and allowances despite staying at home as the country tries to fight the coronavirus.
The announcement by TSC that pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools will be suspended until January next year, the government-employed teachers will earn their wedges without going to work.
“As of now, there is no plan to stop paying teachers. This is because it is not the teacher who has refused to go to class. Schools are closed due to the Covid-19. If the teacher is called upon to resume teaching, they will do so the following day, so long as conditions are right,” said Beatrice Wababu, TSC Director of Communications.
According to TSC, the commission cannot penalize teachers for a problem they did not create until it is decided otherwise.
The headline by the Newspaper did not go well with some Kenyans. Kenyans on Twitter want the Newspaper to issue an apology to teachers as they viewed the article as disrespectful.
In a hashtag #ResistStandardnewspaper Kenyans also accused the newspaper of not focusing on real issues affecting the country and only focused on the “small fish in the society”.

Joseph Musyimi wrote: “The writer of the article (Protus Onyango) and the editor should issue a public apology to all teachers if they want this issue to rest. This is disrespectful.”
One Alex Njuguna said “Teachers who earn peanuts are being vilified by this newspaper but it is mute when politicians use taxpayers money to hire a private jet to Dubai. Joho Magufuli.”
“So should the Government also stop paying teachers during Normal Holidays?… Soldiers are in their camps, there is now war, should they stop earning because they are idle??” One Duncan Castles posed.
On the other side of the coin, some Kenyans saw nothing wrong with the headline.
One KOT CAPTAIN Posed: “But where is the lie (In the headline)??!!”
The other Twitter user Miish added, “It is the bitter truth”
