On Monday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US is considering banning Chinese social media apps, including Tik Tok.
“I don’t want to get out in front of the President (Donald Trump), but it’s something we’re looking at,” Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News.
US lawmakers have raised national security concerns over the handling of Tick Tok’s user data, noting that they are worried about Chinese laws that require companies “to support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.”
Tik Tok, which is not present in China, has distance itself from the Chinese roots to appeal to the global user and has emphasized its independence from China
The Secretary of State’s remarks come at the time when US-China tensions are increasing over the handling of coronavirus outbreak, a nearly two-year trade war, and China’s actions in Hong Kong.

Tik Tok – a short-form video app owned by China-based ByteDance, was recently banned in India together with 58 other Chinese apps after border clash between China and India.
Sources say that TikTok would exit China market in the coming days after China’s establishment of sweeping new national security law for the semi-autonomous city.
