Delay Of Flights Witnessed At JKIA As Airport Workers Down Tools(Video)

Date:

Employees of the Kenya Airport Authority on Monday morning held demonstrations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, leading to delays of flights.

Armed with placards, the workers peacefully protested against JKIA’s take over by Adani, an Indian firm.

The workers are afraid that they will lose their jobs if Adani Group Holding takes over the airport.

Their demos come even as Kenya Airport Workers Union postponed their planned strike with 7-days to review the Adani lease deal.

In late July, President William Ruto however denied claims of planning to sell JKIA, saying that he was only seeking to work with investors to improve it.

“Let’s be honest Kenyans, the airport we have in Nairobi is made of canvas. This is a temporary structure we built almost 7 years ago. Ethiopia have a brand new airport. Rwanda the same. It is the reason why we need to work with investors to have a new airport in Nairobi,” Ruto said.

“I have seen many people saying William Ruto want to sell the airport (JKIA). Am I a madman? How do you sell a strategic national asset? You have to be insane. The airport is a strategic national asset. We want to work under the PPP Program to make the airport better.”

Adani will be taking over JKIA for 30 years.
