President William Ruto is content with forming a broad-based government, a move that will save him from nicknames such as Zakayo.
While speaking in Embu on Wednesday, Ruto said that those joining him from the opposition will help in coming up with plans that will generate the country more revenue, without all the blame falling entirely on him.
“Recently I made a government that will unite Kenyans because I don’t want to be gossiped by any Kenyan. If it is paying debts, we do it together, if is about taxes, lets look for them together. I shouldn’t be the only one labelled Zakayo. Let’s all plan on how to raise revenues. Let everybody come and be Zakayo so that we get the taxes together,” the first in command said.
He went on to urge youths to stop protests that will only lead to destruction of lives and property.
“We are a country that believes in peace. We don’t want violence or protests that cause death and destruction of property. We want peace,” Ruto said.
His remarks come at a time that Kenyans have planned a nationwide protest dubbed nane nane schedule for August 8, 2024.
Speaking on the planned protests Acting IG Gilbert Masengeli said that the country’s security agencies are prepared, urging those planning to protest to do so in accordance to the law.
“Every Kenyan as per the law has liberty to demonstrate, picket and assemble as per the law. That one everyone is very much aware of and where the privilege of one ends is where the other starts,” he said.
“We are governmened by the Rome statute and the Kenyan Constitution,” he said, and affirmed that criminal elements will be dealt with firmly.
“On Gen Zs, they have a message and they have been heard. It is upon us now to differentiate between Gen Zs and opportunists who take advantage of those riots to cause mayhem, destruction of property and acts of violence that are not allowed by the Law,” Masengeli added.
