Rushi Sunak Steps Down As Conservative Leader After Losing In Prime Minister Race

Date:

Rishi Sunak has conceded defeat in the race for UK’s Prime Minister.

Labour Party’s Keir Starmer will now be UK’s next prime minister, bringing an end to 14 years of Conservative government.

“We said we will stop the chaos. And we will. We said we will turn the page. And we have. The work of change begins today,” Starmer celebrated his win.

On the other hand, Sunak apologized for losing, further opting to step down as Conservative Party leader.

“I would like to say, first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all. But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.

“But you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgement that matters,” he said in his speech.

“This is a difficult day, but I leave this job honoured to have been Prime Minister of the best country in the world,” he added

“I am honoured to have been your prime minister, this is the best country in the world.”

Sunak admitted to have called Sunak and congratulated him for the victory.

“The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss,” he said.

“It pains me to think how many good colleagues who contributed so much to their communities and our country will now no longer sit in the House of Commons. I thank them for their hard work and their service,” he added.

Mr Sunak said it is “important” the Conservative Party now rebuilds and also takes up its “crucial role in opposition, professionally and effectively”.

The MP wished Sir Keir and his family well, adding: “Whatever our disagreements in this campaign, he is a decent, public-spirited man who I respect.
