Safaricom Issues Statement As Internet Outage Hits The Country

One of the country’s biggest telecommunication company, Safaricom,has issued a statement, a mid reports that there are internet disruptions in the wake of Finance bill protests.

Safaricom has admitted that it is experiencing outage on its two undersea cables that deliver internet traffic in and out of the country.

“We have activated redundancy measures to  minimise service interruption and keep you connected as we await the full restoration of the cables,” Safaricom said.

Meanwhile, Safaricom informed its users that they may experience reduced internet speeds, and intermittency on various apps, including M-pesa Super App and Safaricom App.

“Customers are advised to use USSD code *334# for Mpesa services or the Sim tool Kit. We thank you for you patience and understanding,” Safaricom said

There were reports that the government was intending to shut down communication, media as well as the internet.

In a statement, the Communication Authority of Kenya however dispelled the claims.

“For the avoidance , the Authority has no intention whatsoever to shutdown internet traffic or interfere with the quality of connectivity,” CA said, further explaining why it wouldn’t take such an action.

“Such actions would be a betrayal of the constitution as a whole, the freedom of expression in particular and our own ethos,” CA stated.

KT moN has however revealed that it received shutdown threats from the government for covering the protests.
