The Director of Communication at the Uhuru Kenyatta Institute Kanze Dena has issued a statement on the status of the retirement benefits for the former head of state, in response to a statement that was earlier issued by the government spokesman Isaac Mwaura on the matter
In her statement, Kanze Dena revealed that Uhuru was issued with four vehicles, of which three are used by his security detail and one by former first lady. The vehicle were part of his entourage previously and not new as the spokesperson had claimed.
She added that the present government hasn’t facilitated the repair and maintenance of the said vehicles.
She also revealed that the fuel cards were blocked in March 2023.
Regarding Uhuru’s office space, the government didn’t cater for the renovations but the former head used funds from his pocket.
“Before retirement and during his retirement, the former president Kenyatta has been sought to undertake carious international roles especially within the region in his capacity as a former head of state,” Dena said, adding such roles necessitated Uhuru to have an office.
“With no response from the statehouse and a lack of committment to finalize on the issue of an office space H.E the former president identified a suitable office and went ahead to fully furnish and equip it from his pocket,” she said.
Dena stated that a formal communication was forwarded to the statehouse for the valuation of Uhuru’s office but there was no response.
“Instead, the communication that was received was via a text message by the then in charge John Makumi. In his statement he indicated the estimates of the property in question. To date, this office runs on the former president’s good will as it awaits action from the state,” the former journalist said.
