Trump set to appeal hush money conviction

Date:

Donald Trump has confirmed he will appeal against his historic conviction in his New York trial in remarks at Trump Tower.

During his approximately 40-minute speech, Trump confirmed he plans to appeal his conviction.

“We’re going to be appealing this scam,” he said.

“We’re going to be appealing it on many different things,” Trump added, complaining about the conduct of Justice Juan Merchan.

“He wouldn’t allow us to have witnesses, he wouldn’t allow us to talk, he wouldn’t allow us to do anything. The judge was a tyrant.”

The ex-president was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in his trial on Thursday.

The court heard from more than 20 witnesses, including Stormy Daniels, whose alleged sexual encounter with the former president was at the centre of the case.

Trump, 77, called the verdict a “disgrace”, adding: “We’ll fight to the end.”

The former president was accused of concealing a payment to buy the silence of Ms Daniels, a former adult film star, in the final days of his 2016 election campaign.

His campaign says it raised $35m in online donations following his conviction.

This is the first time a former or serving US president has been found guilty of a crime.

Trump can still run for president. He could be sent to prison when he’s sentenced on 11 July – but legal experts say a fine is more likely.
