8 KEBS Officials Interdicted in Fake Fertiliser Scandal

Date:

The government has intensified its probe into the fake fertiliser scandal by suspending eight Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials.

According to reports, the eight KEBS officials were accused of issuing certification and marks of quality to two companies which have been linked to the sub-standard fertiliser.

Other officials believed to have played a part in the saga have also been lined up for questioning as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives struggle to get at the bottom of the matter.

Their suspension follows an order from the Ministry of Agriculture ordered the suspension and seizure of fake fertiliser distributed under the subsidy programme.

The ministry confirmed that fertilisers distributed by KEL Chemicals branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos gold and NPK 10:26:10 did not meet all required test parameters.

According to the ministry, the affected consignment was distributed by KEL Chemical fertilizers between 5th and 10th March 2024.

“Following the release of test results by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the government has taken decisive action to safeguard the agricultural sector and farmers by announcing the immediate suspension of KEL Chemicals’ operations and seizure of its fertilizer products,” read the statement in part.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development strongly advises farmers who have acquired or possess fertilizer from KEL Chemicals to immediately discontinue its use and to visit their nearest NCPB facility for further guidance,” it added.

The findings have also compelled Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi to change his tune as he had earlier denied reports of fake fertiliser.

Linturi called for speedy investigations into the saga which has since left farmers in fear.
