Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has shared details of what led to the death of Marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum.
According to the pathologist, Kiptum died as a result of of severe head injuries that resulted from the grisly road accident he was involved in.
Oduor said that his skull had fractures and his lungs and ribs were affected as well.
Oduor was called to do the autopsy following speculations that Kiptum’s death might have truly not resulted from the accident
“Kelvin was a 24-year old gentleman who it is alleged that he was involved in a deadly motor vehicle accident. Following the allegations, there were so many issues that led us to come here and perform the post-mortem to find out what happened.
“The findings were as follows, the late Kelvin had severe head injuries. There were severe skull fractures which were mainly at the base of the skull. The spinal code had intruded into the cranial cavity because of the fractures,” Oduor said.
He added that, ” There were some fractures on the ribs both sides. On the left side, the first, second and third rib were fractures on the right side the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh rib were fractured. There were also injuries to the lungs. So what killed the late Kelvin was severe head injuries which when I look at them they look like something which was caused by a motor vehicle accident.”
Oduor also said that samples had been taken for further analysis because the circumstances of his death were still being investigated.
The samples will undergo a full analysis to determine whether there was something else that might have contributed to the accident.
