“Irresponsible Move” Raila Speaks On Koome Meeting Ruto At Statehouse

Date:

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has faulted the move by Chief Justice Martha Koome to meet with President William Ruto at Statehouse.

Raila, who was speaking in Lamu during the commissioning of Maweni water project, referred to Koome’s move as irresponsible.

According to him, the duo should have met on a neutral ground, if they intended to discuss governance issues.

“The chief justice decision to meet with the president at statehouse is, in our view, an irresponsible move. State House is the home of the Executive. That is where the president resides. If there is going to be a dialogue over issues of governance, it should be held in a neutral ground,” the opposition leader said.

He went on to say that the meeting only means that the Executive is compromising the judiciary, an occurrence that has been witnessed before.

“The Judiciary is being held hostage by the Executive, and we’ve seen this before. We saw it happen under the rule of Mr. Moi, and we’ve tried to caution the current CJ not to go to bed with the Executive,” Raila added.

Koome met with Ruto as well as the speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula on Monday morning.

The Chief Justice called for talks with the Executive last week following the frequent attacks on the Judiciary.

President Ruto, on multiple occasions, claimed the Judiciary was corrupt and was being used by graft cartels to derail his development agenda.

Ruto agreed to the meeting saying that he will ensure that corruption is brought to an end in courts.
Other leaders and organizations, including LSK also opposed the dialogue.
LSK, through its president Eric Theuri, said that instead of talks, Ruto should apologize since he was at fault for disrespecting the courts and judges.
