Why Koome Should Not Hold Talks With Ruto- LSK

Date:

The Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri has addressed the possible dialogue between Chief Justice Martha Koome and president William Ruto.

In a statement on Wednesday, Theuri opposed the talks saying that Ruto should instead apologize over his attacks on the judiciary.

“We take a very firm position that the Chief Justice should not, under any circumstances, have a dialogue with the Executive over its remarks. The proper thing the President should do is to withdraw those remarks and apologize to Kenyans,” he said.

Theuri went on to explain why the meeting between the two arms of government should not happen.

“The perception of corruption, influence and the perception that the Judiciary is a lesser child in the constitution will be upheld if this meeting is conducted.” he said.

Opposition leaders have also opposed the talks saying that they would compromise judiciary’s independence.

“Chief Justice Martha Koome says she wants to dialogue with Ruto. That will mark the start of compromising. There is no need for the Judiciary to hold talks with Ruto. The law says that if you disagree with a court decision you appeal,” Raila said on Tuesday.

“We want to tell the Chief Justice not to compromise the position of the courts. She already took a position and there is no need for negotiations.

“If you want to compromise the judiciary and negotiate with the executive over this kind of dispute, then we are saying you are yourself going to compromise this country,” he added.
