Members of the Law Society of Kenya across the country have taken to the streets to protest against President William Ruto’s remarks that have been targeting the judiciary.
Armed with placards, that demanded for the respect of the third arm of the government, the lawyers protested peacefully.
Some of the notable persons that joined them include; Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa and Kivutha Kibwana.
The ‘learned friends’ have since hit back at the head of state with his “Mambo ni matatu” phrase.
“Mambo ni matatu, heshimu mahakama, heshimu sheria ama uende nyumbani,” they said.
LSK president Eric Theuri who led the protests told the judiciary to remain firm despite the threats.
“We ask them to make decisions only on the basis of the law and Constitution. As long as they are accountable in terms of how they exercise Judicial authority, we shall support them.
“We took an oath to defend the constitution, independence of the Judiciary and the administration of justice. And we are going to retake those oaths in public so that we can send an equivocal message to the Executive and those in the Executive who are harboring false hopes that LSK will cow or be intimidated in the defense of the rule of law,” Theuri said.
On the other hand, Kalonzo stated; “This cannot be just accepted. So Chief Justice Martha Koome and your team, as LSK, we stand in solidarity. We are not here to ask you to issue any favourable orders but do the right thing under the law… If this country is not under the rule of law it can only mean we are under the jungle law.”
