Overage Candidates Miss Chances In Secondary Schools

Overage candidates who sat for 2023 KCPE exams did not secured any positions in secondary schools during the form one placement exercise.

According to Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, only eligible candidates have been placed in secondary schools.

Machogu, who was speaking at Lenana school while releasing results of the form one placement exercise, however said that the over-age candidates will proceed with their education in adult learning institutions.

“However, all over-age learners have been forwarded to the Directorate of Adult and Continuing Education for placement in Adult and Continuing Education institutions,” he said.

Such candidates include ODM staunch supporter Nuru Okanga, 32, who sat for KCPE at Mumias Muslim Primary School in Kakamega County.

Nuru scored 320 marks in the national examination.

He had expressed intentions of proceeding with secondary education and he desired to join Alliance Boys.

“I want to go to Alliance and I’ve already gotten a sponsor. Let me just inform those in Alliance that I will be joining them. Expect great things and I will talk to the teachers to grant me the right to be educating you people on matters politics,” he said in an interview last month.

He also claimed that he had been approached by several school heads who wanted him to join their institutions.

Another candidate is 82-year old Wilson Kipchumba form West Pokot. Kipchumba scored 180 marks in the exams.

During the release of Form one placement results  CS Mchogu further said that candidates who scored 400 marks and above have been placed in National or Extra County schools of their choice.

Learners with disability were also placed in regular  special needs schools depending on their merit, disability categories and choice.

1.4 million candidates sat for 2023 KCPE. 42, 927  of them will be joining national schools, 274, 746 extra-county, 288, 201 County and 792, 230 sub-county schools. Another 2, 225 will get a place in special needs institutions.
