How Kenyan Jobseekers Lost Money to Fake Supreme Court Judge

Date:

Several Kenyans lost huge sums of money to a suspect impersonating Supreme Court Judge William Ouko.

This was revealed after a suspect, Oduor Leakey Amolloh, was arraigned at Kiambu Law Courts on Friday, December 15.

Court documents indicated that the suspect disguised himself as Justice Ouko and promised unsuspecting Kenyans plum government appointments.

However, his fraudulent operations were exposed after Justice Ouko received information about his operations.

The Supreme Court filed a report to police who then tracked and apprehended the suspect.

“According to court papers, on 24th November 2023, Justice William Ouko, Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya received information that a mobile number purporting to be his mobile number was being used to defraud members of the public in pretext that he could influence public employments. Using Justice Ouko’s name he also solicited and received money from unsuspecting victims. The Judge made a report to the police and upon recording a statement, investigations commenced,” a report released by the Judiciary read in part.

“Court papers further read that DCI investigators also received intelligence from the local police and local residents of Awendo area that there are complaints from members of the public against the respondent and have since established that five people located in various parts of the country have fallen victim of such fraud hence the need to trace, interview and record the statements of the said victims,” Judiciary added.

During the hearing on Friday, DCI officers indicated that the suspect had residences in Nairobi, Kakamega and Migori where he is suspected to be operating his fraudulent activities.

Police sought court orders to enable them to search the residences to recover any exhibit that may be relevant to the ongoing investigations.

The DCI officers have also lined up some of the victims who will be interviewed to give more information about the suspect’s operations.
