Students who sat for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) will have a chance to earn government scholarships starting next year.
In a notice, the Ministry of Education noted that those who scored 280 and above in the 2023 exams would be eligible for the scholarships.
However, the Ministry noted that exemption would be given to those who scored 250 in marginalised areas.
“For affirmative action, candidates with special needs and disabilities who attained below 280 marks will be eligible. Learners from vulnerable and marginalised groups with 250 marks and above are also eligible. Refugee learners both girls and boys from camp-based schools who attained 240 and 250 respectively will also benefit from the scholarship program,” the Ministry of Education explained.
It further added that only candidates who sat the 2023 KCPE exams from public primary schools and those from refugee camps would be considered.
Moreover, the Ministry made it clear that learners who would qualify include orphans, those from urban informal settlements, and learners whose parents are disabled and fail to meet the financial obligations of their families.
Learners whose families are affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses would be considered for government scholarships.
Other categories listed are those from poverty-stricken families, those neglected and learners with special needs and disabilities.
Application Procedure
“Interested applicants are advised to collect scholarship application forms from the nearest sub-county education office. Refugee learners form can be collected from Equity Bank Branches in Kakuma and Dadaab and the Sub-County Education offices or Equity Bank Agent in Kakuma and Dadaab or the Office of the Camp Manager, Department of Refugee Services in Kakuma and Dadaab,” the notice stated.
“Application forms can be downloaded from the Ministry of Education website: www.education.go.ke,” it added.

The Ministry stated that the deadline for application will be December 28, 2023.
“Shortlisted candidates, accompanied by parents/guardians will be invited for interviews which will be conducted by the community advisory committees,” it reiterated.
