In the coming few weeks, Kenyans will be able to acquire maize flour at affordable prices.
According to Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, the price of maize flour is on a free fall and by Christmas, Kenyans will be able to buy a 2kg packet at Ksh120.
“The government’s interventions that target to subsidize production are paying off gradually and we expect the prices of Unga to come down further in the coming weeks as we head towards Christmas,” Linturi said on Friday while in Kawangware.
“When the Kenya Kwanza government took office, the cheapest 2kg bag of Unga was selling at Sh240, but as you can see those prices have come down to between Sh130 and sh170 for the most common brands,” he added.
The CS noted that the government is working key stakeholders to ensure that the cost of food is affordable as food security is the government’s key agenda.
“Food security is a key priority of the Kenya Kwanza government. We are already working closely with all our farmers on the measures we have rolled out to increase our yields so that we consolidate the food security agenda in the country,” Linturi said.
He visited several Super markets to assess the prices of maize flour among other basic commodities and he expressed his excitement that traders had reduced the prices.
“This morning, I visited commodities markets in various parts of Nairobi and its environs, including Kawangware, Kibera, Utawala, and Athi River in Machakos County to survey on the prizes of Unga, rice and sugar.
“I’m happy to note that in all the major supermarkets, the unga prizes have reduced from a high of Ksh 235 last year to a low of upto Ksh 130 per 2kg packet. I commend our farmers for their efforts in the farms to feed our great nation. The Goverment of H.E. President @WilliamsRutowill work tirelessly to bring down the cost of food,” he shared on X.
