Kenya Railways restored normal operations of cargo trains following two days of service disruption due to the effects of El Nino rains.
In a statement, Kenya Railways announced that the section between Mariakani and Mombasa Terminals which had experienced landslides due to El Nino had been fixed.
The suspension was placed on Saturday November 18 with the affected areas including Mariakani substation and Miritini in Mombasa.
Additionally, Kenya Railways announced that the loading and offloading of cargo a the Port of Mombasa had resumed.
However, the operator noted that they were working to avert delays due to the high pressure of cargo that had been grounded for two days.

“Kenya Railways wishes to advise you that following the Corporation’s interventions to restore normalcy in the section that was damaged by the heavy rains between Mariakani and Mombasa Terminus, movement of cargo trains to and from Mombasa has now resumed. Loading and offloading of cargo at the Port of Mombasa has also commenced, and we are now working round the clock to minimize any delays,” Kenya Railways announced.
The heavy rains that caused landslides had also caused delays for the passenger trains. SGR trains arrived late while others were delayed due to the disaster.
However, services resumed normally on Monday, November 20.
“SGR passenger train services continue as per schedule. We would like to affirm that safety and reliability remain at the core of our operations.
The Corporation remains committed to keeping you updated throughout this period. Your patience and understanding during this time are greatly appreciated. We regret any inconvenience caused,” Kenya Railways stated.
