“Not Guilty” Kawira Mwangaza Denies 7 Charges Levelled Against Her By MCAs

The hearing of Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment by the senate has kicked off this Tuesday.

The embattled governor was accompanied by her lawyer Elisha Ongoya and the 7 charges that saw her get kicked out by the Meru County Assembly were read out.

She is accused of misappropriating county resources by using her relatives (brother, two sisters, brother-in-law and her husband’s brother) to embezzle county funds.

Secondly, the MCAs allege that she has been engaging in nepotism and unethical practices by presenting her relatives as a technical team for the purposes of traveling to China to certify cancer treatment equipment while knowing that they are not medical professionals.

She is also accused of Bullying, vilifying and demeaning other leaders in the county government. According to MCAs, Mwangaza has sidelined her deputy and has been demeaning him via WhatsApp and encouraging other leaders and his subordinate staff to do so.

The fourth charge is that she has been making illegal appointments e.g appointing a chief officer without the County Assembly’s approval, disregarding the criteria for the establishment of offices in the county without the involvement of the county service board.

Other accusations include employing 100 staff in her office, contempt of court, illegally naming a public road after her husband and refusing to to honor lawful sermons.

The senate asked Mwangaza how she pleads to the charges and she said, “Not guilty.”

The lawyer will now defend her before the senate makes her
