With the intensity of rain increasing in various parts of the country, flooding has become a major concern.
This has been caused by a lack of proper drainage systems rendering major road networks impassable.
Due to this flooding phenomenon, some motorists have been swept away by flooding water prompting relevant authorities to intervene.
Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) advised motorists to drive carefully due to decreased visibility and avoid some highways rendered impassable.
Kenya Red Cross on the other hand advised motorists and passengers how to survive if floods sweep a car away.
Here are the tips according to the Kenya Red Cross.
Stay Calm: Try to remain as calm as possible, even though it’s a terrifying situation.
Unbuckle Your Seatbelt: Quickly unfasten your seatbelt to prepare for escape.
Escape Through the Window: Once the window is down, exit through it. If you can’t roll down the window and the car is filling with water, you may need to break the glass with an object, your feet, or any heavy item available. Use an emergency escape tool if you have one.
Stay Calm in the Water: Once outside the car, take deep breaths and stay as calm as possible. Try to stay afloat and signal for help.
Swim to Safety: Swim toward the surface and make your way to safety if possible. If you can’t swim, try to float and call for help. Remember that time is crucial in this situation, so act quickly and efficiently. Always prioritize your safety and that of others in the vehicle.
The tips will be helpful since the Kenya Metrological Department announced that the rains will persist till January 2024.
Further, the weatherman stated that the country is experiencing the El Nino phenomenon which is associated with massive losses of property and lives.
