The Matatu Owner Association has unveiled a new plan aimed at beating the rising cost of fuel.
According to the Associations chairman Albert Karakacha, matatu owners are now ditching fuel-run vehicles and opting for the gas ones.
Karacha said that they are already in talks with gas operators regrading the plan and vehicles run by gas will hit the road come next year.
“We have gas technology and we are doing research as an association to see whether gas will be cheaper. For gas, we have already talked to two people and by next year we will be having buses that use gas and it is also aimed at protecting Kenyans,” he said during the Association’s meeting that was held in Mombasa on Thursday.
Another strategy is embracing electric buses which he said would take quite some time before it is fully implemented.
“Going forward, we are also talking to electric bus manufacturers but that will take 10 years,” Karakacha said.
This comes just days after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority increased fuel prices by Kshs5 shillings
