The government is uncertain whether the country actually loses Kshs2billion on a daily basis.
Claims that Kenya loses the above mentioned amount of money each day are from the immediate former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kenyatta made the remarks back in 2021 while championing for the Building Bridges Initiative.
The former head of state was then responding to those who were opposing BBI, claiming that it was costly.
“Even those talking about the cost of a referendum, I don’t know where they are getting those figures from…we are waiting for the signatures to be verified then take the process to the counties… these people don’t mislead the public that Ksh.2billion will be spent, yet what they steal everyday is more than Ksh.2 billion. These people are useless, and I will say it openly, how much do they spend every year? My interest is that more resources revert to the people at the grassroots,” Kenyatta said then.
President William Ruto’s government is now planning to confirm whether the allegations are true.
According to the head of Public Service Felix Koskei, the government will soon commission a study that will reveal the exact amount of money that is lost.
“The claims maybe true or false on my own I can’t substantiate the claims but we have a donor ready to fund the study to establish the exact figure we are losing per day and a report will follow. We are almost commissioning the study,” Koksei said.
He added that those who will be found responsible for looting public funds will be held responsible.
“All public servants will be held personally accountable when found with corrupt dealings. The president has been clear that there will be no sacred cows. If you are caught you will deal with the consequences and dealing with it means that you are replaces,” Koskei further said.
