Githu Muigai: Parliament Has Too Many People, They Are Costing Us A Lot Of Money

Date:

Former Attorney General Githu Muigai wants the number of constituencies in the country to be reduced to 100.

While making submissions at the Bomas of Kenya on Thursday, Muigai  suggested that once the constituencies are reduced, they should each have one man and woman as leaders.

“We have too many people in Parliament, we have too many constituencies and counties. They are costing us a lot of money. Reduce the constituencies to about 100 and have one man and one woman in each,” he said.

The lawyer also suggested that the two thirds gender rule should be abolished and instead introuduce civic education in a bid to empower women.

“There is a feeling amongst Kenyans that we have not done enough to justify this. We need more civic education on empowering women…empowering a community. We need to abolish the Woman Rep seat, we create two positions in the constituency. We will achieve 50 percent, and it will be cheaper,” he said.

Muigai further said that the number of counties should as well be reduced.

According to him, while drafting the constitution in 2004, the suggestion was to only have 14 counties. Politicians however turned their back on the suggestion leading to the current 47 counties.

“Bring more counties together and let them work together and mobilize resources together and share together,” he stated.
