Will She Survive? Inside Kawira Mwangaza Fresh Impeachment Plot

Date:

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is staring at another political showdown and test of her political muscles after a caucus of 27 Kenya Kwanza Members of the County Assembly (MCA) in Meru on Saturday, September 23 decided to initiate a fresh impeachment motion

In their latest bid, they accused the first-time governor of discrimination and instigating violence in Meru.

Led by Meru County Assembly Majority Leader Evans Mawira, the MCAs noted that they were withdrawing their support for the governor, expressing disappointment at recent events in the county.

“It is not our agenda to see chaos, to see drama or shenanigans in the county so we have decided to withdraw the support within and outside the assembly that we had given the governor,” Mawira stated.

He said the impeachment process has already started with the collection of signatures.

“We have already appended our signatures from the 27 of us who form or comprise the Kenya Kwanza caucus in the county assembly in preparation for a fresh impeachment motion after the one that we had last year was thwarted in the senate,” he added.

Mawira added that they have agreed to engage other elected MCAs from different political parties who share the same sentiments to see the motion pass from the assembly to the Senate.

His sentiments were seconded by Independent Candidates in Kenya Patrick Muthuri who said they had tried to engage with the governor on their grievances but failed to reach a consensus.

Already, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki warned the governor against organizing a political outreach program dubbed Okolea.

Kindiki noted that it was a platform used by various political leaders to fan violence. He vowed to use police to tackle them.

Besides Kindiki’s strong sentiments, other leaders from the region asked Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua not to intervene.

On her side, Kawira blamed the recent turn of events of her political opponents in the region.

She pleaded with President William Ruto to intervene.

“I know my woes are being fueled and schemed by my opponents and my deputy is supporting them but I am telling the ten greedy MPs that Meru will not be ruled by them and they should accept that the governor is a fearless woman and I will continue to deliver services to the Meru people without being shaken or intimidated by anybody,” Kawira stated.
