Blogger Silvance Abeta, who has reportedly been operating a parody account on X (formerly Twitter) under the name Karen Wanjiku HSC (@WanjikuHSC), was arrested following his sharing and spreading unfounded allegations concerning Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro.
Silvance Abeta’s arrest took place on a Friday, with detectives claiming that his online activities were geared towards propagating false information about Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other government figures and institutions.
Abeta’s charge sheet explicitly outlines the charges against him, which include engaging in cyberbullying and the spread of misinformation.
According to the charge sheet, Abeta has been operating a parody Twitter account, @WanjikuHSC, using the name Karen Wanjiku HSC. This account served as a platform for him to disseminate false information, engage in online bullying, and cyber harass various Kenyan citizens.
Following his arrest, Abeta has taken to social media, seeking assistance from well-wishers to secure his release on bail. He has set up a fundraising campaign to cover the bail amount required for his release.
His arrest highlights the challenges and responsibilities associated with online communication and social media use. While freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it comes with responsibilities, including avoiding the spread of false information and engaging in cyberbullying.
