President Ruto orders deployment of KDF soldiers to deal with bandits

Date:

President Ruto has ordered the deployment of Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) personnel for cooperative security operations with the police.

Starting on February 14 and continuing throughout, KDF and police will take charge in all bandit-prone regions.

Ruto also announced a three-day amnesty for the surrender of firearms in the areas affected by banditry while speaking at the Nakuru State Lodge.

This comes after another directive for Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki to set up camp in the insecure area until peace was restored.

“CS Kindiki is not here today because he was in Baringo and in Turkana the day before. I told him to leave his Nairobi office and go live in the North Rift until the banditry stops,” said President Ruto.

Four police officers and six other victims were killed recently in a bandit ambush on the Kitale-Lodwar route in Turkana County.

Several additional police officers, including the sub-county police commander, were taken to the hospital after a protracted shootout with robbers left them with bullet wounds.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya encouraged the president to consult residents to find a solution, claiming that adding additional police officers won’t help anything.

The government is trying to end banditry and make sure that there are no more deaths as a result.
