DP Rigathi Gachagua has received Ksh.202 million that belonged to him but was confiscated by the state in the previous regime, led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The money that was forfeited to the state six months ago was not profits of crime, according to the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA), which also claimed that the Deputy President had satisfactorily explained the source and legitimacy of the above mentioned money.
Rigathi Gachagua will now receive the money that has been stored in three accounts at Rafiki Microfinance Bank under his name.
The money will also be released from another account that belongs to Jenne Enterprises.
Three accounts at Rafiki Microfinance Bank are used to hold the money; one holds Ksh. 165 million, the other Ksh. 35 million, and the third Ksh. 773,228.
A fourth account with a balance of Ksh 1,138,142 operates under Jenne Enterprises’ name.
Gachagua, who was an MP at the time, confessed receiving the payments from government entities, but there was no proof that he provided any services or goods to the government, Justice Esther Maina found when forfeiting DP’s funds last year.
She added that the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) had demonstrated that despite receiving payments, the MP and his enterprises failed to provide any items or render any services to the ministries or organizations that awarded him contracts.
After the authorities questioned the origin of the Ksh.12.5 billion that moved through his bank accounts, Mr. Gachagua stated last year that one of his goals when he is elected deputy president will try to reclaim the money that has been frozen.
