Wafula Chebukati, the former IEBC chairperson, revealed how Raphael Tuju, the executive director of Azimio, intended to bribe IEBC commissioners to prevent President William Ruto’s election win.
In order for the commissioners to moderate the presidential results in favor of Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga or, at worst, cause a rerun, Mr. Chebukati stated that the former Rarieda MP offered them financial compensation.
Mr. Chebukati described how Mr. Tuju arrived at the Bomas of Kenya and the holding room where he was sleeping in the morning.
Mr Wafula had been invited to testify before the tribunal, which was presided over by Justice Aggrey Muchelule, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development.
Former Busia Senator Amos Wako and attorney Kyalo Mbobu, according to Mr. Chebukati, were in Mr. Tuju’s company, but only the first two spoke during the meeting.
However, when the tribunal asked him to provide more information about the financial prize and how it would be paid out, Mr. Chebukati claimed that he had not encouraged him to do so.
On the contrary, Mr. Wako urged the Commission to consider the national interest and push them to choose a specific candidate, in this case Mr. Odinga, a request he said their respective sides of the split rejected.
“Cherera 4” urged them to consider the sentiments by the senior citizens on moderating results in favour of Mr Odinga or forcing a run-off. “The four commissioners left no doubt that they wanted to subvert the will of the people which is an offence in the Penal Code and Election Offences Act,” said Chebukati.
