According to Peter Kaluma, Kenya has the potential to produce enough natural food to feed Kenyans.
Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has criticized President William Ruto for his remarks on the introduction of GMO foods in Kenya.
“The GMO debate is beyond “matiti” (breasts). We’re in the tropics with maximum rainfall and arable soil. We can produce enough natural food for our people and for sale, with necessary government support. Let’s empower our people, not foreign businessmen,” says Kaluma.
Kaluma’s reply came after President Ruto said those against GMO importation are seeking to distract him from his mission of addressing food insecurity.
“Mimi mwenyewe nimekula chakula ya GMO, lazima tuambiane ukweli…umesikia mtu amemea mapembe, amemea miguu ama ndevu kule South Africa kwa sababu ya kukula GMO?” President Ruto said.
Ruto also revealed most food imports include GMOs, but only to the 1% levels needed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
