President Vladimir Putin bans LGBTQ activities completely in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin has banned all LGBTQ activities in Russia, it’s now illegal.

Just days after a strict new “foreign agents” law went into force, Putin gave his approval to the prohibition. The Kremlin is cracking down on free speech and human rights as its military operation in Ukraine collapse.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill into law that broadens the country’s ban on LGBTQ “promotion,” making it unlawful for anyone to advocate for same-sex relationships or imply that non-heterosexual preferences are “normal.”

The current restrictions dramatically extend the reach of a 2013 legislation that forbade the spreading of material around LGBTQ issues to children. The prohibition on disseminating such information to adults is now expanded by the revised version as signed by Vladimir Putin.

Putin’s changes include harsher punishments for anyone who encourage “non-traditional sexual relationships and/or interests,” pedophilia, and gender transformation. It will be forbidden by the new law in all forms of media, including the internet, magazines, audiovisual services, movies, and advertising.

For “LGBT promotion,” a person could be penalized up to 400,000 rubles ($6,370), and for “LGBT rallies and materials that advocates a transformation of sexuality among youths,” they can be penalized up to 200,000 rubles ($3,185).
