A Meru resident filed a petition at the County Assembly to have governor Kawira Mwangaza impeached after days of row with MCAs.
The resident wants Mwangaza to be sent home over gross misconduct and abuse of office after she delegated roles to her husband Murega Baichu, her relatives as well the appointment of the Meru County Revenue Board general manager.
Political analysts however say that Mwangaza is being frustrated for other reasons considering that she did not appoint her relatives to official county positions.
According to Ambrose Weda, Meru is one of the communities that hardly give women leadership chances except the Women Rep position that is strictly for women.
Weda says that the majority of the men in the county are still in shock because she defeated two political giants after vying on an Independent ticket. He added that Mwangaza is being judged harshly because men are feeling intimidated and embarrassed by her victory.
“Kawira has paralyzed them. Meru is one of the communities that we have been urging to give women a chance. This lady wakes up and goes independent and goes for governor and gets it. 90% of men there are shocked. Part of her problem is those gender nuances in that community. She has not done anything, she has not started working, all she has done is to say this husband of mine is the first gentleman the same way a male governor would do to his wife,” Weda said in a panel discussion with KTN News.
He further warned the MCAs that they might fail to deliver their mandate to Meru people if they make the governor dysfunctional because she is the ‘driver’ of the county.
Former Agriculture minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa agreed with Weda saying that Mere MCAs are yet to come to terms with her August victory. He further said that the MCAs are bitter with Mwangaza because she did not come from their political parties.
“There were three giants including the current governor, Kiraitu Murungi and Mithika Linturi. The split of the votes, I know the governor got more than half of the votes of each of the two but when you look at it properly it was 50-50 contest and of course there are also supporters of Peter Munya who did not participate for other reasons, all of them may, out of the product of that election, maybe feeling that they were let down by the people of Meru and therefore they want to punish the governor for reasons other than real reasons,” Kirwa said.
