Reports emerged on Thursday that Mt. Longonot, a dormant volcano, was experiencing a volcanic eruption.
Videos shared online have made Kenyans believe that there is a volcanic eruption taking place.

“Niko hapa Maai Mahiu na naona live scene of the Mt Longonot eruption. Temperature levels around are high. Wildfires due to drought also starting from lava,” a netizen further claimed.
However, there is no volcanic eruption at the mountain according to former Citizen reporter Enock Sikolia.
Sikolia, who currently works for CGTN, said that he was around Mahi Mahiu and the forest around the mountain was just under fire.
“I am along Mai Mahiu road and I can see the forest around Mt. Longonot on fire,” he said while tagging KWS on his tweet.
“I was just filming my own stuff along Mai Mahiu Rd when my cameras captured fire razing the forest along Mt. Longonot. Started small from the bottom up as smoke bellowed. It started around 2 pm… I am not an expert but I think it was just a wildfire that kept escalating,” Sikolia said in a separate tweet.

A section of Kenyans have also expressed doubts on the eruption reports saying that Scientists would have given a warning about the same.
KWS is however yet to release an official statement about the issue.
Mt. Longonot is located on the South Eastern side of Lake Naivasha. It is believed to have erupted last in the 1860s.
