Langa’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwour alias Jalang’o has taken a swipe at MPs and parties that defected from Azimio after the coalition lost in the presidential election.
The parties include UDM and MDG which joined Kenya Kwanza after the August 9 elections, citing different concerns. Others like PAA and MCC joined Kenya Kwanza just weeks before the election even though the agreement they signed with Azimio restricted them from defecting within 6 months to the general elections. The agreement only allowed them to leave three months after the general elections.
In a breakfast show with Citizen TV, the lawmaker referred to the politicians as opportunists who don’t deserve to be elected. He said that they used to campaign for all those leaders, only for them to run away after Raila Odinga failed to clinch the presidency.
He also revealed that Amason Kingi’s PAA left Azimio because they were denied a chance to dominate in Kilifi yet ODM was the popular party in the county.
“We have UDM which is the bigger party in the North, immediately after we lost the presidency, they bolted. MDG were even coming to azimio’s parliamentary group meetings at KICC, he(MDG chair David Ochieng’) was there, then one morning you see them in Karen. Opportunists to the end,” the lawmaker said.
Jalang’o noted that Kenyans should elect leaders who have a stand and who accept defeat.
“Not those who say all I need is to be in government. Sometimes, that government needs to be checked and with the words of Orengo, this government will punish you people more than it will punish us. It will need us more than it will need you people,” he said.
The defections from Azimio before and after the general elections saw Azimio lose the majority slot in parliament. On Thursday October 6, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula ruled that Kenya Kwanza has the majority number of MPs after some left Azimio for Kenya Kwanza noting that a coalition’s membership can change before and after election.
“Coalitions are not cast in stone and are an evolving arrangement which can occur both prior to and after the elections,” Wetang’ula said.
The house turned chaotic after the declaration forcing the sitting to end prematurely.
