European Union has given Kenya an additional Ksh. 7.8 billion as a grant to address the social-economic impact of coronavirus pandemic in the country.
In a statement to the press, the European Union said the funds will be used towards helping Kenyans at risk of hunger as well as strengthening measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
Within the package, Ksh 3.6 billion will be used to mobilize resources towards containing the spread and impact of COVID-19 in the social, economic, and health sectors through budget support to the government.
Ksh 1.2 billion will be put to direct support to the vulnerable individuals and families in informal settlement through monthly cash transfers.
while another 2.4 to 3 billion will be given to SMEs with short-term working capital, which will be vital for them and enable them to continue operating and keep their jobs.

Ksh600 million will be used directly for the Safe Trade Emergency Facility which will maintain the critical supply chain for trade, access to critically required medicines, and ensuring food security.
“The European Union stands with Kenya during this challenging period and we recognize the severe impact this crisis is having on people’s lives.
“Today, through these support programs, we are making a real difference to local communities across the country as well as in Nairobi’s informal settlements who are most affected by the outbreak, strengthening our partnership with Kenya,” said EU Ambassador to Kenya Simon Mordue.
