The former Prime minister Raila Odinga has admitted that he talked to William Ruto, hours before the results of the presidential elections were declared by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.
In an interview with BBC, the ODM leader confirmed that it was indeed Ruto who called him on August 15. At that time, they both agreed to accept the outcome of the results that Chebukati would announce.
“He called me before the results were announced and just greeted me and we said to ourselves at that time, because we didn’t know what was going to come out, that we would meet and talk,” Raila said.
He however noted that they have not met since then because he believes that Ruto did not win the elections fairly.
“We’ve not met, nor have we talked since that time because I don’t believe that he is the president-elect. I think that I should be the president-elect. And he knows it, deep in his heart, that he did not win these elections, but was a beneficiary of electoral fraud,” Raila said.
Ruto revealed about his phone call to Raila at Bomas of Kenya while giving his speech after being declared the president elect.
“This morning I called Raila and we had a discussion. We agreed whatever the outcome, we shall have a discussion. Remember in his closing speech at Kasarani he said he would be available for a handshake and I believe as a diplomat, there are areas we can agree on moving the country forward,” Ruto said.
Raila was not present at Bomas during the announcement that had kept Kenyans in tension for a number of days.
