There were reports that another Independent Electoral and Boundaries (IEBC) Returning officer for Chuka Igambang’ombe has not been seen for almost a day now.
According to some sources, the Returning officer had been missing since Monday evening, barely 24 hours after Gichugu constituency Returning officers MR. Geoffrey Gitobu died mysteriously.
However, it has now emerged that the Chuka returning Officer is not missing and he is very safe and sound wherever he is. While speaking to the local media, this is what Josephine Mwiti said: “I’m at my home as we speak. I’m safe and sound.”
Gitobu is said to have died mysteriously on Monday August 22, while in Nanyuki. Earlier reports indicated that Gitobu died while at IEBC offices in Nanyuki where he had gone to print some documents.
Apparently, he was on the line waiting to be served before he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital
The issue of Returning officers dying suddenly has left Kenyans wondering whether they were directly involved in influencing the outcome of the elections to favor certain candidates.
A few days ago, the Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Musyoka equally went missing after he left his work station while talking on phone.
Days later, his naked body would be retrieved dumped at Kajiado’s Loitoktok in a forest. Reports by Musyoka’s relatives claimed that some people wanted to bribe him to tilt the win in their favor but he was reluctant to play the monkey games.
According to the relative, the late Embakasi Returning officer was an honest man who could not allow himself to be corrupted by external forces.
Back to Chuka IgambaNg’ombe. In the meantime, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission materials in Chuka Igambang’ombe were destroyed by members of the public a day before the elections.
According to the commission, these materials were being transported to polling stations in Igambang’ombe sub county from Chuka sub county when some unknown people ambushed the vehicle and attacked them.
According to political analysts, this was one fatal mistake and it remains unclear whether these election materials were actually destroyed by members of the public or whether the whole thing was stage-managed to bring confusion and achieve a particular objective.
