Goons Attack IEBC Officials In Nairobi, As Another Official Dies Mysteriously Miles Away From Area Of Service

IEBC officials were allegedly attacked on Monday evening as they prepared the commission’s  responses to presidential petitions.

In a statement shared on social media, the  commission did not mention where exactly the attack occurred but noted that it was within Nairobi.

The attackers were wielding crude weapons. They were however countered by the security.

“Today, Monday, 22nd August, 2022 at around 8:30pm an organized group of goons wielding crude weapons attempted to attack IEBC personnel preparing responses to Presidential election petitions at a premise within Nairobi. However, they were repulsed by Security.

“The Commission condemns this act of hooliganism and intimidation, and calls upon the Inspector of Police (IG) to bring to an end this blatant abuse of the Rule of Law,” the statement by IEBC read.

In other news, an IEBC official identified as Geoffrey Gitobu, who was in charge of Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga has been reported dead.

The returning officer is said to have collapsed and died outside Nanyuki IEBC offices in Laikipia county.

Sources reveal that Gitobu had taken a three-day off to visit his family in Laikipia. He was at the Nanyuki IEBC offices to print some documents but as he waited to be served, he collapsed and was rushed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of his death is yet to be established.
