IEBC officials at a newly gazetted polling station in Ruiru, Kiambu county were left idling for long hours after voters failed to show up at the station to vote by 9 am.
Voting across the country kicked off at 6am on Tuesday morning and most polling centers were already witnessing long queues before the exercise began.
It is however not clear why such was witnessed in such an area that is in Mt. Kenya region, where voter turnout is usually close to 100% in each general election.
A number of Kenyans on Twitter have however claimed that generally low voter turnout will be witnessed in central Kenya because the region does not have a popular presidential candidate. Others however claimed that there is still time and more voters will turn up be fore the exercise during the day.
“Voter turnout in central will be very low. Its expected since they don’t have a presidential candidate,” one said.
“They ate Ruto’s money too…. Truly I tell You, You CANNOT buy a KIKUYU,” read another tweet.
“Everyone waiting for others to appear first ,at noon everyone will be there,” another netizen suggested while another tweet read, “Nope, most people[voters] will go to the station where they voted last time. If you moved them to a new station, then you should have informed them in good time.”
Recently opinion polls showed that William Ruto is the most popular presidential candidate in the region.
